Bird Club was hatched in 2006 by Bird la Bird and Maria Rosa Young. The Birds began life as a cabaret duo. The birds flew their seperate ways, Maria continues with her musical talents and Bird started Bird Club.

I've always loved that moment when you walk into a nightclub and think "Wow". The dancefloor has a magical quality and the crowd and vibe are just right. Anything could happen. Forget about your troubles.

There's performance art on stage. It's reaching out. It's about fun, sex, dressing up and the thrill of being together. I wanted to create that moment every time with Bird Club.

Waiting in the wings

I was fed up with seeing queer ladies usually being on the edge of queer and dyke culture, I wanted to see Femme take centre stage. The femmes would be the stars and queens. Femmes wouldn't be assumed to be straight, in fact the opposite would happen. The time was right because the club became a roaring success within a few months.

Bird Club couldn't have happened without the hard work of a group of people.

Partying politically

From the start, Bird Club incorporated politics in surreal and irreverent ways. Bird Club is the antidote to earnest and internet discussions about gender, sex and politics. Bird Club is self mocking and defiant.

The flock

Bird Club is created by a team of designers, artists and friends with Mama Bird providing the drive and inspiration. The years at the Working Men's club were chaotic, magic and crazy. Visit our Meet the Team for more info.

The Future

We're hatching a new plan for Bird Club. When Bird Club comes back it will be accessible to everyone.
